Saw these images by Susan Anderson in todays sunday times photo supplement. It is part of a body of work looking at the beauty pageant scene in America, i found these images of very young girls made up as though they were women a little unsettling. It was not the images per se that i found disquieting but rather the thought that there is an aspect of American culture that feels that it is appropriate to remove these very young children ( the image above i believe is of a two year old toddler) from their natural context and superimpose upon them values and aesthetics from the adult world.

A selection of ongoing images that challenge the notion of the south west as summer idyll and suggest an alternative reality that exists year round. The images also call into question my own memories of childhood summers spent in the region as they are juxtaposed with my experience as a resident in the area.

As i move on with the project i am becoming aware of the segregation of the locals and the wealthy apartment owners. There is a sense of a town and of a population losing its identity.
I am interested in trying visually articulate this growing sense of melancholy and sense of loss and also the frustration of the local population.

Its been longer than usual between posts as i have been organising my work for the show last week, and also between this, visiting photo london i have been a bit short on time. Here are some more images from that series and i should have some pics of the show soon.

Personal Project

These images are from a project in which i am trying to convey the feeling i get from the space in which i live. The area is undergoing a mass influx of luxury flats being built on the sites of previous hotels in a once vibrant holiday resort. The result is a sense of the local people being passed by, and of being the victim of someone elses vision for the future of their town, there is a feeling of having no control over their own future. The holiday rentals spreading around the town are available to those with the kind of money that cannot be earned in this part of the country (cornwall). The result as the population is more and more seasonal is the destruction of a community and the creation of a summer theme park.
